When someone searches for what to do in Tarragona they usually come across long lists of monuments, beaches, neighborhoods and nearby excursions. And although this demonstrates the city’s wealth, it can also generate a quite common doubt: what really deserves to be visited when time is limited.
Many travelers arrive in the city for a day or a weekend, and what they seek is not so much an infinite list of places, but a logical way to organize the visit.
From the Hotel Canadá by Dynamic Hotels, where many travelers pass through each year taking advantage of their stay to get closer to Tarragona, we see that the experience usually works better when something simple is maintained.
Tarragona is enjoyed better without hurry. Alternating Roman monuments, walks through the old town, viewpoints facing the Mediterranean and squares with local life allows discovering the city calmly and understanding its character without needing to see everything.

Visit the Roman amphitheater of Tarragona
If there is an image that summarizes the history of Tarragona, it is probably that of the Roman amphitheater next to the sea. Built in the 2nd century, this space hosted gladiator fights and public spectacles when the city was Tarraco, one of the most important capitals of the Roman Empire in the Iberian Peninsula.
What makes this place special is not only its state of conservation, but its location facing the Mediterranean. From the stands you can contemplate the sea, something unusual in this type of historical constructions.

Explore the Roman circus and the praetorium
The Roman circus of Tarragona is one of the best preserved in Europe. In this enclosure, chariot races were held, one of the most popular spectacles during the Roman era.
Much of the structure is integrated into current buildings today, but underground galleries can still be toured that allow imagining how the enclosure worked centuries ago. The visit is usually completed by climbing the Praetorium, a medieval tower that offers one of the best viewpoints of the historic center.

Get lost in the Part Alta and the Cathedral of Tarragona
The Part Alta is the old town of Tarragona and one of the places where the city’s personality is best perceived. The streets are narrow, the squares appear almost unexpectedly and the atmosphere changes according to the time of day.
In the center of this neighborhood is the Cathedral of Santa Tecla, a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles that dominates the historic ensemble. Beyond the interior visit, the cathedral’s surroundings invite strolling without hurry.

Stroll along the Rambla Nova
The Rambla Nova is the main avenue of Tarragona and one of the easiest places to orient yourself in the city. It is a wide promenade with trees, sculptures, shops and cafés.
Many visitors arrive here after touring the old town or before approaching the sea. In addition to its value as an urban axis, it is a good place to observe the city’s daily life.

Look out at the Balcony of the Mediterranean
At the end of the Rambla Nova is the famous Balcony of the Mediterranean, a viewpoint from which you can observe the sea, the port and part of the Tarragonese coast.
There is a local tradition that consists of “touching iron”, placing hands on the metal railing of the viewpoint to attract good luck. Beyond the anecdote, it is one of the most pleasant places to stop for a moment during the visit.

Discover the Serrallo neighborhood
The Serrallo is the ancient fishermen’s neighborhood of Tarragona and preserves an atmosphere different from the historic center. Its quiet streets and proximity to the port reflect the city’s seafaring character.
Many of its restaurants specialize in fresh fish and rice dishes, which makes the neighborhood one of the best places to eat or dine after a day of visits.

Stop at the Fòrum square or the Font square
In the old town there are several squares with quite a bit of atmosphere, but two stand out especially: the Fòrum square and the Font square.
The first is small and cozy, surrounded by bars and restaurants. The second is larger and is located in front of the City Hall. Both are good places to take a break during the visit.

Approach the Miracle beach
One of the advantages of Tarragona is that the sea is very close to the historic center. The Miracle beach is just a few minutes’ walk away.
It is a perfect place to change the day’s pace: switching from touring monuments to taking a walk by the water or simply resting in front of the Mediterranean.

Spend a day at PortAventura World
Just a few minutes from Tarragona is PortAventura World, one of Europe’s most famous theme parks.
The park combines attractions, shows and thematic areas inspired by different cultures. Nearby is also Ferrari Land, dedicated to the world of motorsports and very popular among those seeking strong emotions.

Excursion to the Les Ferreres aqueduct
A few kilometers from Tarragona is the Les Ferreres aqueduct, known as Pont del Diable. It is an impressive Roman engineering work that supplied water to ancient Tarraco.
Surrounded by nature, today it is possible to walk through it and appreciate its structure from different points. It is a short but highly recommended excursion to complete the visit to the city.
